SPIRITS IN AFRICAN WORLDVIEW: IMPLICATIONS FOR THE CHURCH IN AFRICA

Abstract


This work set out to study the place of spirits in African worldview. It locates the
remote foundations of the present interest which Christians in Africa exhibit about spirits
and the Holy Spirit. It examines the nature and activities of spirit as well as human
relationship with them within the worldview in question. It also highlights the implications
of the worldview for Christian faith particularly in the light of the points of convergence
and divergence between the two traditions. Its conclusion is that for Africans, a good
understanding of the spirits in their traditional worldview is vital for their appreciation and
relationship with the Holy Spirit as Christians.
